Productivity: Save Energy by Not Changing

Productivity can be the holy grail of a business person or any human. I am blessed to be surrounded by women who care about me and support me. When I launched my business, I was doubly blessed to join a group of hard-core women entrepreneurs who are dedicated to helping each other achieve financial success, along with a lot of joy.

A Surprise Share

At our last meeting, one of the women led the structure of check-ins: sharing successes, sharing where you need support, and any wildcards.

As we went around the table, my heart expanded, listening to each woman claim their victories, big and small. When my turn came, I was surprised that the first success brag was about my body.

People who share a success about their body usually talk about the pounds lost or the workout routine adhered to. What popped out of my mouth was: “For the last two weeks, I enjoyed my body just as it was without feeling the compulsion to change it.”

Now I reserve the right to change anything about my body, eating, or movement at any time I want. I also reserve the right to hate my body and rage at any unforeseen moment.

A Different Definition of Success

But frankly, those moves don’t signify success to me. I have said or done those things on and off thousands of times in my life. On the flip side, I can’t recall experiencing such an extended period of allowing my body to be just as it is without overly thinking about its size or shape and needing to fix it.

I don’t think this is a woman thing. I have yet to meet a human that doesn’t spend a lot of personal energy comparing and contrasting what they have or don’t have–money, a perfect body, the right relationship–with others or with some idealized image.

Energy as a Vital Resource

As an entrepreneur, I’m much more aware of the resources I spend on anything. Time and money matter to the bottom line, but so do my brain, heart, and energy.

I wonder how much productivity we’d gain individually and collectively if we just went about the business of “me doing me” without apology, of me letting go of even one of the things I “have to handle” and let it be.

I don’t know the answer. The jury is still out for me, but I will savor this delightful moment for what it is.
